New stylists have landed at Orbit

November 2nd, 2009

We have 2 brand spanking new stylists! Well, they are not new to the hair biz, just to us. They are: Natalie Morgan and Amanda Jaimes and they came from Ann Kelso. We are so happy to have them with us and they have immediately fit in with our crew. They are also offering $10 off cuts & $20 off colour your first visit at Orbit.

I just have to say that as a business owner, hearing about what happened to Ann Kelso Salon sends shivers up my spine. Just a couple of months ago Pink closed its doors as well.   I wish only the best for all of their employees as well as the owner.  This economic climate has really affected so many of us and having two salon institutions vanish in the same year is shocking to us in the hair biz. It’s so easy to take things for granted, or get so wrapped up in the day to day that one can forget to be thankful for what we have. I’m so happy and thankful for our employees, clients, and other friends who own independent businesses as well.  If we all stay tough and work together, we can stand up to the chain stores of the world.

New Massage Person Starts Saturday!!

August 28th, 2009

Just wanted to let you know that Elizabeth Wilder is joining our team as a massage therapist starting this Saturday 8/29. Book an appointment to see her, or just drop by and say hello. She’ll be here mainly on Saturdays at the beginning, but she’ll also be available on call during the week. Just ask us about her availability.

Our great friend and former massage queen Amy Powell has a beautiful 6 month old baby boy named Brock. She is busy full time raising him now.

Take care,

Christian

Thanks for supporting us at Fashion Week!

July 21st, 2009

So we didn’t win best salon at the Austin Fashion Awards, but to be in the top 5 is a huge honour. Thanks for representing!  Congrats to our Comal neighbor Solid Gold for taking home a boot.

The Orbit/302 party was a blast and it was great to make some new friends in the fashion world.  We also have some amazing new art on the walls.  Come by and check it out if you haven’t had time.  Rodney and Jessica, Orbit stylists have some cool new work up, and we also have some of Brian Maloney’s prints as well.  You can see his work at http://www.snigs.com.

The awards show was a blast.  I was definitely the only person there with a baby, but I think that Poppy is the ultimate accessory.  We saw most of the show and we were afraid that we’d have to leave before our category was announced.  Poppy’s bedtime is 8pm

, and if we’re late she gets VERY fussy.  I don’t think that the fashionistas would be down with a screeching baby.  But Alas, just in time the announcements were made.  Congrats to Avant and Anne Kelso for taking top prizes.  They are two amazing businesses.  Orbit is still getting it’s feet wet, figuratively, so look out salon peeps!

We did, however, take home one prize for the eventing; a picture of Poppy on the Red Carpet!

Painting the inside, putting up fancy lights!

February 15th, 2009

The whole Orbit krew came out to help paint.  Ross Pruett, stylist / interior designer designed the colour scheme and it’s looks amazing.  We all donned painting clothes and fueled our work with pizza and lone star.  While this was going on, the Can2 guys were installing about 50 light fixtures.  I found the coolest circular lights at Home Depot.  They are perfect for us.  We have a combination of circlar natural light flourescents and halogens.  We have a ton of natural light here as well with the multiple windows.  Our light here is soooo much better than the old location.  We can work all night now!

sheet rock and floors

February 3rd, 2009

Wow, things are starting to come together.  After seeing the raw wood walls and ceiling, it’s fun to see things looking like a new house.  The Can2 crew is so fast, they had all the sheet rock and wall texture up in no time.  Myself, Al, and Travis took on the job of sanding and staining the floors.  It was pretty easy other than the fact that some of the wood was covered in glue from ancient linoleum tile.  The job took 2 full days and a big part of it was scraping and sanding glue.  We used a heat gun to burn and melt it off inch by inch.  Putting the stain on was more fun, although my knees beg to differ.
